2017 Fillies & Mares Grenache, The Rocks District

A 100% varietal Grenache.  Riviere Galets Vineyard in The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater.

Accolades from previous release:

Review of Washington Wines: Deep ruby-crimson colored, it possesses attractive aromas of wild fruits - raspberries, mountain blueberries, brambly currants and scents of red rose petals, mulberry, pipe tobacco, lavendar, sage, anise, a hint of mint, violets and oriental incense. The flavors, as well, are dramatic, with layers of red and black fruits that are infused with licorice root, bittersweet chocolate, black tea and Rocks, cobblestone and loam materials. On the back, the wine intensifies with sensations of grilled berries and nuts, creme de cassis, blueberry preserves, lanolin, and burnt charcoal, followed by a Rhone-like moderate alcohol (13.5%) and tannin finish. The range of flavors gives it a plus. 19+/20 points(July 2020)

Jeb Dunnuck: Ripe strawberry and raspberry fruits as well as notes of violets, orange blossom, and flowers all emerge from the NV (2016 & 2017) Fillies & Mares Grenache. It's a nicely balanced, elegant Grenache with polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. All destemmed and brought up in neutral oak, it's going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming 4-6 years. (April 2020)

Double Gold Medal, Seattle Wine Awards (May 2019)

91 Points, Owen Bargreen (June 2018)

Gold Medal, San Francisco Chronicle (January 2018)

Gold Medal, Tri-Cities Wine Festival (November 2017)

Washington Wine Blog says ... This begins with wet stone, red cherry preserves and guava puree on the nose. The palate has a silky texture, as red fruits develop alongside a touch of blood orange. This is a really good effort from a hot vintage. Drink 2018-2026.

The penetration continues on the back with macerated berries, roasted nuts, mocha, creme de cassis and kidskin, followed by lengthy spiced (nutmeg, clove) ripe tannin finish. 19+/20 points(July 2020)

Outstanding!, Jeb Dunnuck: 2016 Stakes Race is all Syrah that was just 25% destemmed and brought up in a mix of new and neutral French oak. Offering more elegance and complexity, it's medium ruby/purple hue is followed by a smoky, meaty Syrah loaded with ripe black raspberry fruits, notes of cured meats, toasted nuts, milk chocolate, and dried herbs. It's beautifully textured, medium-bodied, and elegant on the palate. It will drink nicely for 5-7 years or more. 91 Points. (April 2020)
